Hutton Niobrara Ranch Wildlife Sanctuary
Hutton Niobrara Ranch Wildlife Sanctuary is a 5,000-acre ranch and wildlife sanctuary located along the Niobrara National Scenic River near Bassett, NE. It consists of spectacular scenery, including upland prairie, steep canyons, woodlands, and high bluffs that overlook meadows, marshes, and riparian forest along the Niobrara River, which forms the Sanctuary’s northern boundary. It is a haven for wildlife rare in other parts of Nebraska. Lana Arrowsmith, On-Site Hutton Coordinator, documents the wildlife she sees while caring for the property. In February 2021, she documented a mountain lion using a trail camera. Trail cameras automatically take a photo when something moves in front of it, making them perfect for detecting animals that avoid human disturbance. Below are some additional photos of wildlife she has encountered over the years.
