Fall 2024 Volunteer Opportunities
If AOK's 25th Anniversary demonstrates anything, it shows how motivated people can make a difference for environmental advocacy, conservation, and education throughout the Great Plains. To make our next 25 years successful, we need volunteers like you to get involved. Below are some areas we could use help:
- Habitat Helpers: Provide physical labor clearing invasive species and maintaining trails. Although experience with chainsaws, brush hogs, or weed eaters is desired, there are tasks for all skill levels. Our sanctuaries near Lincoln, KS, and Bassett, NE, are especially in need of volunteers. Housing may be provided for volunteers or volunteer groups to our Nebraska property. Contact Amy at amy@audubonofkansas.org to express your interest.
- Advocacy Committee (aka the Voice for Wildlife): Are you tired of seeing wildlife and habitat destroyed and feeling powerless to do anything about it? Join our Advocacy Committee to work with others to strategically evaluate what public outreach, legislative outreach, and public policy should be pursued for the maximum good. We are particularly looking for individuals with expertise in working with state and local governments or those with a keen interest in any of our advocacy issues (endangered species conservation including Whooping Cranes, Black-footed Ferrets, and prairie-chickens; water/wetland conservation especially at Cheyenne Bottoms and Quivira; invasive species management such as Old World bluestem, Sericia, salt cedar, eastern red cedar, and others; wind/solar energy siting issues; and others). Contact Jackie at jackie@audubonofkansas.org to apply. Please let us know why you would like to join the committee.
- Archiving/History/Museum Aficionados: After 25 years, we have accumulated a lot of documents and photos. We could use someone who can help us organize our documents in a standardized way for easy retrieval. Familiarity with Google Drive and scanning documents helpful, but not required. Contact Jackie at jackie@audubonofkansas.org to get started!
- Sanctuaries Committee Members: Do you want to help protect land for the next generation? Are you knowledgeable about different land management strategies like regenerative farming, conservation grazing, federal landowner assistance programs, or managing invasive species? Please consider joining our Sanctuaries Committee. This committee oversees the management of our sanctuaries as well as evaluates potential properties for their conservation value. Contact Jackie and Randy at jackie@audubonofkansas.org for more information.
